Carl Sagan said, “The illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world.” He echoed some familiar arguments that persons on the pro side harp on about marijuana legalization. These persons agree that there are many advantages to legalizing marijuana such as deriving taxes from its sales, reducing chronic pain and less minors eventually using the drug.
Income can be obtained from the legalization of marijuana. There is a heavy global demand for marijuana. Large numbers of persons are incarcerated annually for possessing marijuana, ingesting it and even selling it. Therefore, a smart government would look at the demand and supply of this economy and try to make a profit from it. In an area where marijuana is legalized, there would be regulations in place to ensure quality control as well as a robust taxation system that collects the money and uses it to improve the area.
There are many health reasons to legalize marijuana. A specific strain of marijuana called Charlotte’s Web has been shown to treat persons with seizures as the amount of the component THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol) which has psychoactive properties is very low 0.3% and is safe for children while the component CBC (Cannabichromene) is anti-inflammatory and has pain relief properties. This can be lifechanging for persons with cancer or even who suffer from chronic illnesses.
If marijuana is legalized, minors would be less likely to use it. Underage children especially teenagers are curious and experiment with different things to discover who they are. They also challenge their beliefs to come up with their own conclusions. They experiment with forbidden things, like alcohol and drugs, namely marijuana. They feel a thrill when they partake in something that is forbidden. If marijuana is legalized, there will no longer be this desire to try the forbidden marijuana and less minors will partake in consuming it.
To summarize, marijuana should be legalized because there several advantages that come with its legalization. One is that governments can profit from its sale. Two is that there are health benefits to legalizing marijuana. Three is that underage children would be deterred from trying it if marijuana is legalized.
